Document Summary

People with dysthymia are more likely to have a major depressive episode. Emotional irritability (anger, etc) also predisposes kids for depression. Depression has very high comorbidity with other disorders in children: 90% have one other disorder (anxiety, cd, adhd, 50% have two or more. Dysthymia has a slightly lower comorbidity with other diseases. Substance abuse is usually the only disorder that doesn"t precede depression. Not a gender difference in prevalence until adolescence and then girls have a much higher risk. Some disorders like autism or adhd have pretty consistent courses that happen over the lifetime. Depression is unique because it is episodic have symptoms for a while but then they go away (some symptoms may linger but for the most part they go away) Each time someone has a depressive episode, it increases likelihood that they will have another: once they have 3, they are very high risk for having another. Episode can usually last for 8 or 9 months.
