Only been recognized as a serious issue since the 1970"s. Child abuse prevention month is in april. Mandatory reporting laws vary from state to state. All md citizens are encouraged to report if they learn about child abuse or neglect. Use of physical indicators and the parents stories to investigate the real story. A lot of the times child may present themselves as being disruptive and have cognitive/emotional disruptiveness. Estimated that more than 18% of child maltreatment cases are physical abuse. Colicky babies may be at a higher risk because they are crying more. Babies have a peak crying developmental period that is often when it occurs. Can cause brain bleeding and tears in the brain matter. Depends on case and age of baby. If children survive, they may suffer serious brain damage. Minors can commit this if they are older than the child being abused.
