Examples of ways inequality within industrial societies has declined over the past 150 years: equality for women (especially in the workforce) overall gender equality, political equality (especially for women) democracy, decline in child labor, equality among the races, equal justice under law (equal legal system, equal distribution of income and wealth, more prestige equality, absence of slavery. Why inequality has declined within industrial societies: mass education, mass media, subsistence technology complexity of industrialized technology, changing occupational structure (increase in # and types of jobs, mass production, elites increase wealth, decrease share, labor shortage in frontier society, democratic ideology, factories, decline in the birth rate, compatibility with childbearing and breastfeeding, baby bottle and commercial foods. Stratification: class system, tiny upper class, small middle class, huge lower class, much gender inequality, much ethnic inequality. Polity: absence of democracy, military dictatorship, monarchies, theocracies, political corruption, ethnic tribal power struggle violence, national boundaries set by other powers.
