BIL 104 Lecture 2: Biology Class Notes 2nd part
Document Summary
Behaviour may be transmitted from parent to child. Interaction between the genes and the environment. Behavioural traits: abilities, feelings, personality and intelligence. It is dif cult to determine the genetic contribution of a behaviour and what is learned. Behavioural genetics: intersection of the nervous system variation and function as well as the environment that shapes our behaviour. Uses empirical risk, twin studies, and adoption studies. Also association studies with snp"s and analysis of speci c mutations that present in individuals with the behaviour. Sensory neurons: bring information towards the brain. Motor neurons: send information outward to muscles (what action to take based on information) Neurotransmitter: chemicals that communicate between neurons (transmit signal) Genes control the synthesis, levels, and distribution of neurotransmitters. Receiving ends of neurons are the dendrites (arms close to the cell body) Information is passed through cell body into axon (long arms of neurons that reach far out)
