COM 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Shared Experience, Narrowcasting, Inedia
Document Summary
Mass media = the vehicles though which messages are disseminated to mass audiences. Media multitasking = simultaneous exposure to messages from different media. Mass communication = technology-assisted transmission of messages to mass audiences. People strongly depend on media in their everyday lives, and similarly, media industries depend on having an audience: this is a symbiosis relationship, meaning they each need the other to survive. News and information, entertainment, amusement and diversion, and the exchange of ideas. Mass media is only possible through technology: some people refer to it as industrial communication because of its heavy reliance on technology. Social media: unlike mass media, social media is accessible to almost anymore because you only need the internet to access it (not big machinery) Visual literacy = a competency at deciphering meaning from images: john debs introduced the term in 1969, technology had this more and more possible and accessible.
