Binary- the opposite of slavery is freedom and opposite of freedom is slavery. At the root of that binary is the ability to have a choice. If you are unable to exercise your will, then you are a slave. You need to be able to liberate yourself from your desires. Political versus personal freedom: government that restrains you from doing terrible things is in fact liberating, enlightenment- spread of enlightened thought, personal freedom, reason, and natural rights, god gives reason to man. Man then uses reason to define god"s natural law. It is the community of those men that then create governments. The role of writing, therefore, is spread ideas. Novels are written to inform people about how to live in a free society. This is part of the project of creating a nation based on reason. If freedom is defined in such a textualized way, then it is easy to slip out of that freedom.
