September 7th with the first broadcast of sportscenter: 1980: ted turner introduces a 24-hour schedule of news and news-related features when he launches cable news network (cnn), 1980: the weather channel started providing 24-hour weather and environmental programming. Pay-per-view: pay-per-view (ppv) allows viewers to order individual programs from the cable company for a one-time fee, initially driven by three types of programming: Wwf wrasslin : widespread use of ppv depends on addressability an efficient means for the cable system office to receive program orders and address individual ppv decoders. Video on demand: similar to pay-per-view. Cable broadcast internet: cable companies now offer subscribers an upgrade to broadband internet access. Much faster than old dial-up modem over telephone lines! Cable telephony: voice over internet protocol (voip) turns voice into digital packets that travel over the internet, cable companies offer triple play subscription.
