Parties--political organizations that want to influence policy by getting people elected to make policy. Parties often want to influence policy in a range of areas. Interest groups--political organizations that want to influence those who have been elected to make certain policies. Interest groups want to influence policy on a more narrow range of issues. Party system--number of relevant parties in a country, meaning they are likely to be able to enter executive branch, & where those parties are located in political space. Single party systems--only one party is allowed to exist; not democratic. Dominant party systems--multiple parties exist but usually only one dominates the executive & legislative branches; can be consistent with democracy. Two-party systems--two main parties alternate influencing the executive & legislative branches, other parties exist but aren"t usually relevant. Multi-party systems--more than 2 parties are routinely involved in the executive branch or aren"t relative in the legislative branch.
