It was not enacted because of the nation"s founders liked reporters or newspapers. It wasn"t enacted to keep prayer out of school. It wasnt enacted to legitamize exoctic dancing or pornography. Freedom of the press doesn"t exist to protect the press. Keeps from repressing the free flowing of ideas. Freedom of expression had roots in classical civilization, rekindled by the printing press. Most states already had free expression guarantees. Founders believed that natural law and holy law were not in conflict. They recognized that maximum self-determination is an inherent passion. With this freedom, marvelous achievements have been accomplished. For gov, in limits power, makes operations more difficult/time consuming. It does not ass efficiency, which is desirable. It embodies the core of the declaration of independence. The only legitimate source of government authority is permissive. We are governed only because we agree to be governed. Government to be open, answerable to the people, not afraid of civil discourse.
