PSY 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Raw Score, Kurtosis, Central Tendency
Document Summary
Chapter 3 --- describing quanitaive data with summary staisics. Central tendency --- looking for a single value to summarize the enire distribuion. Mode one with highest frequency: could be way diferent from the rest of the distribuion, could end up with more than one mode, the mode ignores most of the informaion within the distribuion. Raw score mean = deviaion score; all deviaion scores should sum to equal 0. Mode: can be used for each scale, most oten used for nominal, not good for others because it ignores other informaion. Median: can be calculated for ordinal, raio, and interval, most oten used for ordinal, can be used with all shapes of distribuion, does not take distance into account. Mean: can be used for interval or raio, used when distribuion is symmetrical, best because it takes all informaion into account, it is extremely sensiive to outliers. Sampling stability of the three measures of central tendency.
