ACBS 160D1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Bioavailability, Habituation, Commensalism
Document Summary
Over time, a variety of animals followed different pathways to domestication. Main point: connecting pathways of domestication, domesticated species and modes of subsistence. Horticulturalists- from hunter gatherers to first famers, small garden- simple hoe farming, sedentary lifestyle, commensal pathway cat, pig, chicken. Pastoralists: from hunter gatherers to first farmers, animal husbandry (animal farming) Agriculturalists: from sedentary first farmers to agriculturalists, large scale food production, animals assisted, directed pathway- donkey, camel, horse bees. Agriculture = a provisional system based primarily on the production and consumption of domesticated resources. Food supply: pastoralists (herders) can feed many more people in a much more unstable environment, allowing humans to live in climates as diverse as siberia, mongolia, and the deserts of africa. Migration: allowed more migration (animals pulling carts), and long distance trade. Resource ownership and defense: settled living, and greater investment in resource management strengthened notions of ownership over stored or controlled resources.
