Histories of Domestication: Genetics and Modern Population Distributions
• Domestication
o Wild and Domestic is not a Dichotomy
o Genetics
o Archaeology
o Zoology
• Commensal Pathway
o Animals that tend to feed on human trash or hunt animals attracted to human
settlements.
o They became partners at some point.
o Dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, guinea pigs, hamsters, turkeys, Muscovy ducks, guinea
fowl
• Prey Pathway
o Many major livestock species
o Game management strategies that turned into herd management
o Sheep, goats, cattle, llamas, pigs, water buffalo, mithan, bali cattle, yak, alpaca,
reindeer
• Directed Pathway
o Secondary Products- wool, milk
o The domestication of wild species that people saw as desirable
o Horses, donkeys, camels, buffalo (bison), ferret, mink, silver fox, chinchilla, emu,
ostrich, and fish
• Recognizing Domestication
o Two types of approaches (Signatures) have been applied.
▪ 1. Those reflecting the evolutionary impact of domestication on the animal
(morphological responses- form size, proportions, bone structure).
▪ 2. Those reflecting human goals in managing animal populations (herding
strategies, breeding).
