Molecular Transitions (pg 95-96)
Molecules exist in quantized energy states, vibrational and rotational
energy states
Electrons play a central role in keeping atoms together in a molecule
Changes in the EM spectrum can break bonds and cause atom separation
Example: radiation in the UV and visible regions of the EM spectrum tends
to induce electron excitations
Lower frequency, lower energy (vise versa)
Covalent Bonding ( pg 102-104)
When two atoms get in close proximity of each other, the electrostatic
attraction between electrons located between the atoms and the protons
in each of the atomic nuclei leads to a net attractive force between the two
atoms
