CHEM 151 Lecture Notes - Electromagnetic Spectrum, Rotational Energy, Covalent Bond
Molecular Transitions (pg 95-96)
• Molecules exist in quantized energy states, vibrational and rotational
energy states
• Electrons play a central role in keeping atoms together in a molecule
• Changes in the EM spectrum can break bonds and cause atom separation
• Example: radiation in the UV and visible regions of the EM spectrum tends
to induce electron excitations
• Lower frequency, lower energy (vise versa)
Covalent Bonding ( pg 102-104)
• When two atoms get in close proximity of each other, the electrostatic
attraction between electrons located between the atoms and the protons
in each of the atomic nuclei leads to a net attractive force between the two
atoms
