Document Summary

Exam 4 review and notes: understanding nucleophiles and electrophiles: Nucleophilic species are atoms which are electron rich, being either electronegative atoms or double bound carbons. Electrophilic species are atoms which are less electronegative than an atom they are bonded to, resulting in a partial positive charge. The two major addition reactions you should know are both additions to an alkene (carbon-carbon double bond). The first major addition reaction is the addition of a halogen (ie. br, i, cl) by using some binary acid (hbr, hi, hcl). The second major addition reaction you must know is the addition of an oh group to an alkene from acidified water. Typically, you will see water as a reactant, and some given ternary oxy-acid (h2so4 or hno3) above the reaction arrow. All this means is that you will treat h2o in the reaction as h3o+.
