A public is an imaginary construct or idea. A public is a group of people, anywhere in any form, that have a common interest. You often hear people refer to publics as the general public and popular culture. A counterpublic is usually a smaller group of people who share something misunder- stood by the larger public and who join because of that. Counterpublics are, by definition, formed by their conflict with the norms and con- texts of their cultural environment, and this context of domination inevitably entails distortion. We are not , we are ! European muslims are using online platforms to engage with the public on their own terms. These efforts illustrate the main features of counter publics: Documenting feelings of exclusion and misrepresentations by the mainstream pub- lic. These spaces are increasingly needed, with every new incident or discourse that puts.
