An area of social life where individuals/groups come together to identify and discuss society"s problems. A space in which political participation is enacted through talk. A realm of social life in which public opinion is formed. Not a place for the private sphere or the market place, or authority. Where is a public sphere: traced the origins to the bourgeois public sphere of the 18th century due to there. British coffee houses, french salons, and german dinners: they all varied in size, style and composition of publics, but shared three main criteria (institutional criteria): disregard of social status. Use media as a tool for political and advertising. Political influence: domain of common concerns. Issues and opinions could come from a places that have never been questioned before. This began the decline of the public sphere, which habermas links to the growth of capitalism and wealth.
