Seismic wave amplitude increases when waves move into soft sediments, so more damage is caused. 1989 loma prieta (sf) eq did lots of damage in marina district, reclaimed from bay. Thats why its better to build your house on a solid rock foundation. Magnitude = 7. 0 (fairly big, scale goes to about ~9. 5) Intensity = 10 (very big, scale goes 1-12) Fire (sf mostly burned to ground after 1906 eq from broken gas lines and water lines) Each # = 10x increase in ground motion. Each # = 32x increase in energy released.
