Document Summary

Open with comments about yo-yo ma"s vision being upheld in this piece. At one point cambridge becomes very dissonant before getting into the main chorus. Similar to a fuge how each part comes in one at a time, but eventually comes together. Focus on the strings, especially the violinist who have the melody. Yo-yo ma"s mission of the silk road project was truly brought to life. Seeing all of the different instruments from around the silk road homogenize into one ensemble was quite the treat. Cambridge had a much longer intro and slower build up. Possibly this was done due to the grand stage as opposed to the smaller one in new york. After the build up the tempo was slower, while still keeping the same meter. Hints of heterophany between the strings sections. In the cambridge version, dynamics were played with as the whole beginning of the piece crescendoed to the chorus.
