32 views3 pages

Document Summary

Block 3 - lecture 1 - building blocks. Most important parts of a cell (there isn"t just one organelle): Understand the need for cells to communication, coordinate activities, know what"s going on in other cells/organs) Understand that cells talk to each other by releasing chemicals and receptors receive the signals. Today"s lecture was more of an introduction, it was very basic. Organelles of the cell (are not alive), but the cell"s alive: Mitochondria (the only organelle that can be considered to be alive is the mitochondria) Cells need to be able to communicate with other cells. For example: the mitochondria in the retinal cells is not the same from day one because mitochondria is replaced even though retinal neurons are not replaced. If homeostasis fails to provide enough na+ or provides too much na+ --> the cell is affected. Na+ homeostasis fails, cells gain water and swell. These chemicals can be in the bloodstream (hormones)
