HIST 2003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: White Supremacy, Vocab (Song)
Document Summary
Gabriel"s rebellion: this was a pot by a slave named gabriel, who planned to attack richmond in 1800 and end slavery in virginia with about a thousand slaves to back him up. There were plans to set fires to districts, lead attacks on white settlers and even kidnap the governor james monroe. But this plan was thwarted when two slaves reported the plan to their master and gabriel and his men were eventually caught and gabriel, along with twenty-five others, was hanged. The haitian revolt (1791-1804): this revolt was a revolution full of pride and power for freed black and slaves alike while it terrified the whites. Blacks looked to haiti as a symbol for their fight for freedom and rights and also symbolized, given the opportunity, blacks could succeed just as much as whites. Blacks, because of this, could never again be excluded from the possibility of freedom and liberty.
