Practice responses to a range of emotions such as anger, shock, and silence; make sure the meeting is kept short. Never say negative things to the terminated employee. Know the phone number of security; advise security that a termination meeting is going to occur. Change computer passwords and secure credit cards and company cars. Stress to the employee that this was an upper management policy decision.
