Document Summary

Increases # of red blood cells in body to increase oxygen carried to muscle: can be achieved with blood, red blood cells, or erythropoietin(which stimulates bone marrow to produced rbcs) Typical procedures: autologous transfusion or previously donated blood after a period of hematocrit recovery or through a homologous transfusion from a cross-matched donor. Steps: remove 1-4 units of blood, store it for 4-8 weeks, reinfuse the rbcs (around 1 week prior to completion) blood doping can double the hemoglobin, but it can cause too much an increase in blood viscosity. Proven effects: increased endurance: 7% increase in hgb, 5% increase in vo2 max, 34% increase in time to exhaustion at 95% vo2 max, 44 second improvement in 5 mile treadmill run time. Side effects: infection, heart problems (increases blood volume which leads to high blood pressure, clots, stroke, and heart failure)
