BIO 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Electron Transport Chain, Light-Independent Reactions, Photosynthetic Reaction Centre
Document Summary
Photosynthesis part 2 (chapter 8: looking at biochemical process. 2 stages of photosynthesis: the light reactions (photo, the calvin cycle (synthesis, both intimately tied biochemical reactions, but separate, all organisms have these reactions. A photosystem consists of a reaction-center complex (a type of protein complex) surrounded by light-harvesting complexes. The light-harvesting complexes (pigment molecules bound to proteins) funnel the energy of photons (via resonance) to the reaction center. A primary electron acceptor in the reaction center accepts an excited electron from chlorophyll a: not allow a bond to break, give up an electron at the right wavelength. In the porphyrin ring, it allows electrons to be packed together and stabilize with mg ion. Double and single bonds are in there. Electron transport system: electrons from photosynthesis come from water, this is the electron transport system, what is the goal, to move electrons to a place where it can do beneficial work.
