Document Summary

A group of two or more atoms is a compound. A combination of two or more different elements is a compound. All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds (f2, h2, etc) Group 8a -the noble gases- are never found as any part of a naturally occurring chemical compound. Each of them have a full valence shell. Groups 1a-7a tens to forms compound that fill their valence shells. Shell 2 has an available space, at most, of eight: Lithium can give up an electron or can accept seven electrons. A covalent bond occurs when electrons are shared between two atoms. A chemical bond occurs when two atoms are attracted enough to each other to stay together. A pair of shared electrons is known as a bonding electron pair. Lone pairs or nonbonding pairs of electrons are the valence electrons not involved in the covalent bond.
