The natural hx or tropical progression of allergic diseases that often begin early in life. Chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disorder that results in itching & skin lesions. Not fully understood, but believed to involve both genetic & environmental factors: many children have a family hx of eczema, allergies or asthma. Appears to be related to abnormal function of the skin: alterations in perspiration, peripheral vascular function, & heat tolerance, transepidermal water loss (skin barrier dysfunction) Results in increased allergen absorption & microbial colonization. Infantile type: face, scalp, trunk extensor surfaces or extremities. Childhood type: flexural folds of ext (antecubital, popliteal fossa) neck, ankles. Adult type: upper arms, back, wrists, hands, fingers, feet, toes. Bathe in warm water (not hot: mild soap or no soap, add robathol or keri-oil, soak for 10-15 mins. Monday, march 2, 2020: pat dry & within 3 mins apply emollient. Bathing without emollient application will dry out the skin further!
