Encoding: the process whereby we give information into our brain. Retrieval: process whereby we give the information out of the brain for later use. Atkinson and shiffrin"s model three stages of memory. Sensory memory: (first stage of memory )we first record information as a fleeting sensory experience. it helps restore literal copies of sensory (audio, visual) information for brief periods of time. Short-term memory: sensory information has a limited capacity, in order to remember it short-term memory, we need to rehearsal by repeating information over time . It can hold about 7 pieces of information for around 20 seconds. Long-term memory: some information passes from short-term memory to long term memory, it is relatively permanent and less limited.
