BIOL 134 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Minimum Inhibitory Concentration, Adaptive Immune System, Innate Immune System
Document Summary
Susceptibility testing - sometimes called sensitivity testing. Procedure for checking the infecting bacteria for their resistance to antibiotics. If the disease is severe: the tests take time that the patient might not have, best guess at the right antibiotic. If the disease organism has no known resistance. Clinical sample is sent to lab to culture organisms. Depending on sample, may be obvious, or may have native flora to deal with. Skin , stool, sputum: many other bacteria. Lab tests all the potential pathogens found in the sample. Lab grows pure cultures of each pathogen to be tested. Liquid cultures: inoculate the nutrient broth with a few bacteria. Take mic and compare to expected mic for the bacteria. Alternative methods: zone of inhibition (kirby-bauer test) Gro(cid:449) (cid:271)a(cid:272)teria a(cid:374)d spread a (cid:862)la(cid:449)(cid:374)(cid:863) o(cid:374) a plate. Place sterile fiber disks with antibiotics soaked into them. Relationship between mic and zone of inhibition depends on: Have to figure it out by experimentation.
