Socialization: the process by which individuals internalize the values beliefs and norms of a society and learn to be functioning member of society. He believed that all objects in society develop meaning as a direct product of social interaction. Every meaning we give comes from interactions with other people. We learn who we are by interacting with other people like your parents or siblings. Believed that humans see themselves in two ways: Second way: from the point of view of others (looking glass self)- individual instance, how we think others see us (interview example, generalized other: the idea or image that a person assumes others have of them. When we accept that the generalized other exist we accept the role. Role theory: the idea that we act out socially defined categories in our everyday lives. A set of duties, expectations and normative behaviors (example student, job, gender, parenting)
