CHID 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: John Elder Robison, Asperger Syndrome, Disability Studies
Document Summary
Title: look me in the eye: my life with asperger"s. Summary: this short but powerful chapter discusses robison"s realization of empathy and the way it manifests in his life with his condition. Here, robison discusses how he came to understand the social implications of expressing empathy (or not). This manifests in an instance where robison experiences a large degree of social ostracism after instinctively smiling after hearing of the death of a young child. Here, robison further analyzes his experience in understanding empathy throughout his adolescence: although this chapter is not more than five pages, it was some of the most profound writing i have gotten a hold of this quarter. This piece specifically flipped the idea of empathy on my head. Unlike some of the authors we have explored so far this quarter, robison speaks from the experience of someone in the disabled community.
