Personality assessment: thematic apperception test (tat, participant writes a story about what is happening in the picture, 10-20 pictures; analyzed for recurrent themes. What is abnormal: the personal values of a given diagnostician, the expectations of the culture in which a person lives, the expectations of the person"s culture of origin, anyone who doesn"t meet our cultural norm. In seattle, if someone were to grab a twig and use it as a toothpick, they would be weird. In nigeria, if someone were to grab a twig and use it as a toothpick, it wouldn"t be considered weird: general assumptions about human nature. Statistical deviation from the norm: anyone outside of the bell curve, harmfulness, suffering, and impairment, abnormal behavior, behavior that is personally distressing, personally dysfunctional, and/or so culturally deviant that other people judge it to be inappropriate or maladaptive.
