Document Summary
Memory = the ne(cid:401)vous system"s capacity to ac(cid:400)ui(cid:401)e and (cid:401)etain skills and knowledge for later retrieval, our memories are often incomplete, biased and distorted. We acquire memories by processing information: three processing phases of memory, encoding: the process of information so that it can be stored. Attention allows us to encode a memory: attention: focusing mental resources on information; allows further processing for perception, memory and response, having limited attention helps us to function. Visual attention: according to one theory: we automatically pay attention to and recognize basic visual features in an environment, including color, shape, size, orientation and movement. Finding a person with a red coat in a sea of black = really easy. Finding your friend with a red coat in a sea of red coat = can be challenging. Auditory attention: hard to perform 2-attention demanding tasks at the same time. Selective attention allows us to filter unwanted information.
