Psych 101 lecture 17 sleep and sleep disorder. Sleep over the life span: the older we get, the less we sleep and less time is spent in rem and slow wave sleep. 20% is spent in rem: elderly adults. Stages 3 and 4 (slow wave sleep) decreases from 30-50 years of age. Sleep disorders and disturbances: insomnia: chronic inability to get sufficient sleep; women suffer from insomnia more than men. Awakens easily and can"t go back to sleep (circadian rhythm problem) Awakens briefly and frequently (worry, drug and alcohol use) Avoid long term use because it decreases slow wave sleep and rem sleep. Natural remedies: narcolepsy: irresistible sleep attacks during the day; triggered by intense emotions; enter directly into rem; inability to produce hypocretin hypocretin. Treatment: stimulants and antidepressants: sleep apnea: temporary failure of breathing during sleep; abnormality in the medulla, blockage of air passages (i. e. caused by being overweight)
