COMM 2273 Lecture Notes - Lecture 60: Communitarianism
Document Summary
First, communitarianism denies individuality and does not exist in the sense of larger scale communities. This is so because a religion, a nation or a culture are conceived as separate from and usually as higher and above the people that comprise it. Reverence for religion, nation and culture, and a strong sense of belonging to them, do not translate into caring for the fellow human beings who also belong to them. They people are seen as vehicles or servants of these ideals. It is for this reason that cultural, religious or ethnic politics are anti- humanistic and also why using the word community" to describe the large-scale entity is not helpful. Second, communitarianism is illogical as people don"t live in just one community. All communities have different norms that prevent a person from being a creation of solely one.
