COMM 2273 Lecture 66: AT- EXTINCTION COMES FIRST
Document Summary
It says if we take a certain action, we will all die, then extinction precludes, but there"s no reason why should look to the end rather than the action: morality still exists even if we don"t. It is a rule that constrains actions rather than contained within the action itself. Morality is about constraining actions when they are taken, so there would be no need for morality when there are no agents. We can say that the rules of football exist even if no one is playing football: morality is not self-interested. Morality is not an agent, so saying morality requires its own existence is nonsense. Instead, morality is simply something humans have to be consistent with when we act. The purpose of morality is to constrain the actions of agents, not to promote its own existence: morality is a metaphysical truth that exists outside of humanity. All existence is contingent, meaning it could be or not be.
