Symbiosis is not just an interaction between two or more organisms in which both benefit. Mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism are all types of symbiosis. Parasite - an organism living on or in another organism and obtaining its nutrients and energy at the expense of the second organism. A parasite may or may not be a pathogen. Pathogen - a biological agent that causes disease to its host. Viruses are parasites (they parasitize the cellular machinery) Many of our important human diseases have similar diseases in animals indicating there may have been a host jump. Disease - injurious physiological activity caused b the continuous irritation by a primary causal factor and expressed in characteristic pathological conditions called symptoms. Infectious disease - caused by a pathogen which can spread from a diseased to a healthy host.
