Demographic imperative
⁃ racial and ethnic ratio is increasing
⁃ used to have more immigrants from europe, now more from latin american and asia
⁃ increasing domestic diversity, clearly shows that us has become very heterogeneous and
will become even more so in future years
Economic imperative
⁃ tremendous changes in the workplace
⁃ business all around the world are continually expanding into overseas markets in the
process of globalization
⁃ not just diversity of colleagues
⁃ but also new business markets, developing new products for differing cultural contexts,
and marketing products in culturally appropriate and effective ways
Technological imperative
⁃ internet affect how people develop relationships
Self-awareness imperative
⁃ raise own self and cultural identity
⁃ ethnocentrism, meaning that we assume, subconsciously, that the way we do thing is
the only way and best way
Defining Culture
⁃ “learned patterns of perception, values, and behaviors, shared by a group of people,
that are dynamic and heterogenous”
⁃ unique ways we learned to eat, sleep, love, talk
⁃ sort of lens reveal the world. the difficulty is trying to understand our own culture, look
at our glasses without taking them off
⁃ a group experience because it is shared who live in and share the same social
environment
