Document Summary

Cmc is human communication facilitated by technology. Human communication that occurs through the use of two or more electronic devices. Many different forms of cmc (ex: texting, email, social media, etc. ) Ex: words with friends, tik tok, etc. Cmc has fewer social cues than f2f. Social cue - the verbal things i say & the nonverbal things i do. Argues that developing a relationship through cmc is not possible because it lacks social cues. Social information processing theory (sipt) argues people can develop closeness through cmc. People create a different way to substitute for missing nonverbal cues. Traditional nonverbal cues & cell phone usage. Our body moves differently when using phone vs. not using phone. Ex: looking down at phone vs. looking up walking. When participants were on their phone, they walked slower. Less eye contact due to looking at phone. Argues that the presence of a cell phone will negatively impact conversations.
