Entertainment & Advertising
• Entertainment exists to attract audiences and to sell stuff
• Could be selling content, product, or service
• Purpose: to attract audiences to commercials (messages)
• “selling your attention”

o We like what we expect

• Providing something predictable will secure audiences.
o Predictable formula: genres, storylines, characters
Gender

Critiques of advertising
- Advertisements create a need to begin with. Not that advertisements make us buy things
we don’t need.
- 50-60k is the income needed to be happy. But that’s the limit. True happiness comes
from people and experiences.
- Advertising is excessive
