Document Summary

Ppl only remember 25-50% of what they hear. Listening is the function of receiving verbal and nonverbal messages then determining meaning from both messages. Hearing is the physiological act of taking in sounds. External distractions/ noise: cell phone going off. Using jargon, message overload, receiver apprehension, or listener bias. Observe the verbal and nonverbal cues that your partner is expressing. Focus: don"t do anything else while listening. Acknowledge: the message even if you don"t agree with it (mhmm, or nod head) We need to teach listening in schools so that everyone is capable of listening. L: love, wishing people well - it"s very hard to judge a person when you are wishing them well at the same time. Deep voices are more attractive to people. Warm, velvety, smooth like hot chocolate if someone speaks in a monotone, or speaks as though then end of every statement is a question. Quick excited speech, or slow emphasized speech.
