Chemical engineers concern themselves w/ the chemical & transport processes that turn green coffee beans into coffee products (roasted beans, brewed coffee, etc. ) Skills - design, testing, scale - up, operation, control, & optimization. Understanding - unit operations (chemical rxs & heat/mass transfer ) Utilizes engineering skills & science knowledge to analyze & improve these. Transport phenomena - transport of heat, fluids, & mass. Mass ( water & coffee extraction ) Thermodynamics - heat & its relation to energy & work. A mature coffee tree ( 3 yrs - 15 yrs old) produces 1 lb of coffee per year. Peaberrys = when only 1 seed develops. Coffee is 2nd to oil in volume of trade.
