Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
• Grew up in Bonn, Germany but then moved to Vienna in 1787
o Returned home to Germany to take care of his family but then moved
permanently to Vienna in 1792
▪ Aristocrats in Vienna supported him financially
• Musical career
o Received an education in music from his father at a young age
o Composed symphonies, piano concertos, piano sonatas, and string quartets
▪ Introduced many new elements to music such as emotional depth
o Started to lose his hearing and his deafness made him grumpy and socially
awkward
• Three periods: early, middle or heroic, and late periods
o Early period (until 1802)
▪ Influenced by classical music and classical composers such as Mozart and
