Some people did not respect the roman rulers. Collapse, and land was given to local barons and kings. People owe their allegiance to barons/kings in exchange for protection. Based on disagreements over succession to the throne. Kings would go to war with each other over the correct religion of that state. Catholic church acted as an international arbiter. People would go to war with catholic kings in order to spread.
