PSC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: The Conscious Mind, Mental Model, Sleep Spindle
Document Summary
Consciousness: the process underlying the mental model we create of the world of which we are aware. Function: allows us to retrieve an idea, a fact, an emotion, or a memory and combine it with critical thinking. The conscious mind has to process things sequentially, while the non-conscious mind can handle many streams of information in parallel. Keeps our brain from being overwhelmed by stimulation and limiting what we notice and think about. Provides us with a mental place where sensation is combined with emotions, motives, memories. Speak continuously for one minute about anything that comes to your mind. Findings: previously done with college students in the states, and the majority of students could not speak for a minute w/o speaking about the white bear. Circadian rhythms: occurs during a 24 hour period. Ex: the sleep-wake cycle, shift in temperature, shift in certain hormone levels, Internal desynchronization: biological systems not in phase with one another.
