PSC 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Groupthink, Cognitive Dissonance, Interpersonal Attraction
Document Summary
Exposure effect : we are attracted to something the more we are exposed to it. Halo effect : we believe that people with one attractive feature also have other attractive features. Sexual desire & other intense physical sensations. Intense emotions based on perceptions of the beloved"s feelings toward the self. Relatively durable (less likely to decline over time) Social comparison theory: people evaluate their opinions by comparing them with the opinions of others whom they respect. Identification: mentally associating oneself with another person or group in one"s thoughts, feelings, or actions. Persuasion: a deliberate attempt to influence another"s attitudes and behavior through communication. Source (attractive, knowledgeable, respected, similar to audience) Conformity: giving in to the pressures of others, even though one thinks or feels differently. Not wanting to spoil the study results. Not wanting to embarrass the wrong participants . Harmony was more important than discord because there was no clear cost for conforming.
