Nathaniel Clifford Wolf was born in Shanghai, China on January 6, 1924. He pursued an
education in California, graduating from high school in Santa Rosa and then enrolling at UC
Davis in 1940. He was involved on campus, being president of Sophomore Class, president of
North Hall Club, and elected to Sigma Xi. Additionally, he was awarded the Bonnheim
Scholarship and Peter J. Shields Scholarship. In 1943, Wolf transferred to the Berkeley campus,
since all undergraduate instruction at Davis was terminated. At Berkeley, Wolf continued to be
involved and was the co - organizer of the Aggie Club. In May 1943, he graduated Bachelor of
Science in Agriculture with the highest honors. Wolf enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve
and reported to the US Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School, located in New York. He was
appointed as Ensign on April 12, 1944, and by March of 1945, Wolf reported to the USS Boric
and was assigned as Gunnery and Torpedo Officer on the Destroyer. Sadly, on August 5, 1945,
Ensign Nathaniel Clifford Wolf was killed, when a Japanese kamakazi attack sunk the USS
Boric.
Joseph Ghirardelli Baker was born in Oakland, California on December 19, 1921. He
graduated from Menlo School, located in Menlo Park, California, and enrolled at UC Berkeley in
February 1940. By 1942, Baker transferred to the Davis campus for Summer Session and Fall
Semester, and then re - enrolled at Berkeley for Spring Semester. He graduated in May of 1943
and enlisted in the Reserve Corps. By August of 1943, Baker was on duty as Corporal and he
later became Second Lieutenant. He was in service for one year, ten months, and 22 days,
working with infantry. In July 1944, Baker was sent overseas to France, when the Normandy
Beachhead was invaded. Lieutenant Baker was killed in action on July 15, 1944.
