Often seen in children or adults who have hx of abuse or neglect. Those w/ poor diet often eat supplements (dirt ) Ex: woman in late 30s ate dirt partially because she was hungry but also to soothe herself. She has hx of being abused and malnourished (poor when growing up, lack of sources). Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat. What you see doesn"t correspond to reality. Have rule in head where a certain amount of calories eaten means you need to run a certain amount of miles. Parents don"t have say once their child is a legal adult. Many start out w/ anorexia and then move to bulimia. Person feels they need to be in control. Also fear they cannot be in control. Often can get to stage where it"s difficult to eat and not vomit. Looks fine on outside, but damaged on inside. A parent may have shared diet issues.
