Document Summary
Humans have a strong tendency towards cognitive consistency. Holding logically inconsistent or incompatible thoughts about ourselves, others, or the world produces cognitive dissonance. The mind seeks a resolution to the discomfort by rejecting or changing one or more of the incomsistent cognitions. Dissonance reduction is done largely outside of our awareness. Ex: cognitive dissonance of belieiving we live in safe world . terrorist attack throws them off. Ex: think relationship is good, something happens so there"s conflict between ideation and reality, some sort of resolution occurs. Modern art tends to jar consistency (cognitive dissonance) Loved or hated by people due to its unpredictability. Dissonance resolution between competing thoughts between a and b. Disregard stop believing in a or b. Change: flip your belief of a and b (not a or b) Ex: i wont get drunk and black out . Continues to get drunk and black out. A friend says something that is offensive or inappropriate.
