Anthro 2d - lecture 13 - more ideologies of language. In the u. s. law english is not the official language. 92% of americans speak english without difficulty. 89% of americans are monolingual english speakers. And most of the other 11% speak english very well. Only a small amount of people in the u. s. cannot speak any english. English only policies are a way to advocate racist ideologies without having to be held accountable for publicly promoting racism. Government (and other) business is already conducted in english. Education is already conducted in english with the goal for everyone to learn english. Multilingual services provided in critical circumstances english is not being replaced. Cost of translation services is very small. English only policies function as tools of exclusion. Non-english languages are treated as dangerous for white monolingual english speakers. Inner sphere - the world of private life, intimacy, family, and close community.
