Document Summary

Example of a supramolecular structure: molecules ordered into a higher level of organization w/ emergent properties. Hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and oxygen are hydrophobic: =they can dissolve well in the lipid bilayer. Transport protein cell membranes are permeable to specific ions and polar molecules. Hydrophilic substance can avoid the lipid bilayer (hydrophobic interior) through transport proteins: channel proteins function: (1) hydrophilic channel that certain molecules or atomic ions use as a tunnel through the membrane. Carrier proteins hold onto their passengers and change their shape in a way to shuttle them across the membrane. Passive transport is diffusion of a substance across a membrane with no energy. When a substance is more concentrated on one side of a membrane, it will diffuse across the membrane down its concentration gradient. Passive transport diffusion of a substance across a biological membrane: (cid:272)ell does(cid:374)"t (cid:374)eed to e(cid:454)pel e(cid:374)erg(cid:455, aquaporins will allow water to diffuse rapidly across the membrane.
