Document Summary

Human genetic disease || lecture 21 || week 8 || 11. 16. Inheritance patterns are more complex than mendelian genetics. Not all heritable characters are determined so simply. However, mendelian genetics do apply to hereditary patterns. Sometimes alleles are not completely dominant or recessive. A gene can have more than two alleles, or produce multiple phenotypes. Mendel"s peas showed complete dominance: either dominant or recessive phenotype. Some genes have a phenotype that is a hybrid of dominant and recessive incomplete dominance. This is a 1:2:1 ratio (bc heterozygotes have a separate phenotype) Codominance - two alleles each affect the phenotype in separate, distinguishable ways. Codominant alleles m and n on red blood cells. An allele is dominant because it is seen in the phenotype. Tay-sachs disease is an inherited disease in which parents can pass on their tay-sachs allele to their offspring - it is a codominant allele, so all their potential children are screwed :((
